Banged Up by Jack Dickson

A Jas Anderson Thriller, Book 2

Framed for murder, gay ex-cop must survive notorious Barlinnie prison

LOS ANGELES—September 27, 2019—ReQueered Tales is proud to announce it has formed a new publishing venture to re-publish older LGBTQ fiction—beginning with award-winning titles and acclaimed authors. Our ninth release, available worldwide on Amazon as a Kindle e-book, and Kindle Unlimited, is “BANGED UP” by Jack Dickson.

Tartan Noir is a relatively new label, but Jack Dickson was writing Gay Tartan Noir back in the late 1990s. His trilogy features Jas Anderson, a gay cop working seedy parts of Dennistoun, who faces down deceit, drugs, violence, blackmail and betrayal. Corruption within the establishment, sometimes unseen, is always close at hand … and holds the keys to his fate. In Banged Up, the second book, Jas has been framed for the murder of his lover Leigh and is now in notorious Barlinnie prison – a violent and decidedly unsafe place for an ex-cop … especially a gay ex-cop.

On its first appearance, New Zealand author John Wiltshire commented on this installment of the Jas Anderson trilogy: “this series is … mainstream crime but with a gay protagonist. Do not think hearts and roses. This series is so gritty it’s actually like having your teeth pulled sometimes reading it, but, hey, no pain no gain, right? This one is set in prison … Jas is a cop, remember, so prison is not a good place for him to be … Brilliant.”

Detective Sergeant Jas Anderson is imprisoned and fighting for his life. Anderson was the violent anti-hero of FreeForm, and ended up in that story, being expelled from the Glasgow police force. Banged Up starts with Jas being framed by his ex-colleagues. He is remanded to Barlinnie prison, and is forced to share a cell with Steve McStay, sentenced for aggravated assault on two gay men. In this all-male environment, inmates don’t divide into gay and straight, but rather into who dominates … and who doesn’t. Resilient as ever, Jas forms an unlikely partnership with Steve in his fight for survival.

Readers who loved FreeForm, book one in the series, enjoyed the 1999 sequel. JJ Kwashniak at Amazon wrote: “The writing is solid … just when you are riding along the story, Dickson can come out of left field and toss something anew into the mix.”

Canadian author R Bruce MacDonald stated at GoodReads: “An interesting modern, first person account of life behind bars in a British prison. The author comes across as honest and forthcoming about how [Anderson] learns to cope with an incarcerated existence.”

Scotland’s Gay Times put it succinctly: “Intricate plots which combine elements of the hard-boiled and the intensely erotic.”
