Steam by Jay B Laws

SF Fantasy Horror Tale Returns

Debut novel seals reputation as master Fantasy story-teller.

LOS ANGELES—May 15, 2019—ReQueered Tales is proud to announce it has formed a new publishing venture to re-publish older gay and lesbian fiction — with an immediate focus on mystery, horror and suspense genres. Our first release, available worldwide on Amazon as a Kindle e-book, is STEAM by Jay B. Laws.

Behind the scenes, our team is enthusiastic about a wealth of great fiction which, sadly, has fallen off the radar. A fantastic number of works, many published before 2000, are no longer available to a new generation of LGBT readers and their allies. ReQueered Tales aims to reset the balance by restoring them circulation a diverse catalog of the best works.

In 1991, Jay B. Laws, then an up-and-coming playwright and fiction author, published Steam through legendary gay publisher Alyson Publications. It was nominated as Best Gay Science Fiction, Horror or Fantasy at the 4th Annual Lambda Literary Awards in 1992. The Lambda Book Report said: “Stephen King would blush with appreciation.”

Others celebrated Steam including Richard Labonte: “Steam is the perfect horror tale: too scary to pick up, too gripping to put down. Jay Laws has taken the genre of psychological chiller and twisted it into a truly queer adventure.”

Now, after a period of more than 20 years, Steam returns. In this new ReQueered Tales edition, Gary D. Laws, Jay’s brother, has written a powerful new foreword with extensive quotes in his brother’s own words. And in an exclusive new Introduction, Hal Bodner has set the context for Steam in an era where AIDS was still a terminal diagnosis. Steam has been described as an allegory that chronicles the early days of the epidemic.
